interesting though but youd think a more central character would get that treament before Aya. Also I would Imagine Patchouli or Alice would already be in a position to counter Marisa, or you could even look at Nitori and her technology being the opposite of Marisa and her magic?
I suppose, but in a way (though hesitant I am to argue this completely) it almost seems like they're replacements. I'm not necessarily insinuating that ZUN is fazing out other characters or anything, but isn't it uncanny, the way they resemble each other, and yet clash? Sanae and Reimu, too.
Maybe it's just my eternal disdain for Marisa that's showing, though.
Nitori, Patchy, and Alice don't really work as "replacements" for Marisa - they're more like complements.

Doubt it I think he just feels like making some rivals for some of his characters.
Marisa's Rival? Reimu, though Reimu doesn't seem to think so much about that.
Before fanon came along, Alice was easily the closest to Marisa's contrast, mirror, natural rival (barring the longevity of the rivalry with Reimu), everything. Both are undoubtedly western style. However, Alice is neat, introvert, a thinker and strategist, and human turned youkai. Marisa's home is a sty, she's more extrovert, prefers overwhelming power, and is a human... who's still human.
Much of the same could be said of Patchouli, except that she was born youkai and didn't need to work for it like Alice did and Marisa will have to or already is, if the hints are anything to go by. Everything needn't be similar and she's still suitable for this, but not as much as Alice is or should be. She's just better for it.
I predict another trend to surface in the near future... Aya x Hatate. I further predict this relationship will be similar to the one between Mokou and Kaguya, IE love/hate.
But then again, fanon has often taken very surprising turns, so who can tell.
