Assuming that MUH BATTLE RIFLE doesn't get again defeated by reality. Because the Cult of The Marksman has yet to be put behind the shed and executed after forcing the POS that was the M14 and associated 7.62mm ARs onto everyone because of various stupid reasons (and a number of outright lies) when even back then intermediate rounds were shown to be better.
M4s still are going to be around as PDWs and probably come back when it turns out a the new wonder rifle's barely an improvement and forced through so they could finally say they found a "Better" rifle instead of all the previous failed replacements which weren't worth changing over for.
