Wow, that's interesting to hear.... I went for years doing exactly that(even in winter) if not for cooling down, to at least have white-noise to drown out sound so I could sleep..... but it seems I am also immortal and outlived my fan. =(
Quite the interesting urban legend, I'd assume it's just a foolproof plan to set you up with a cold. At least that's what a fan would do to me if I slept with one.

That's not how colds work. You aren't going to catch a viral disease from a fan unless an infected person touches it first.
Sleep at whatever temperature you find most comfortable. If you don't want to get sick, avoid contact with sick people and wash your hands instead of worrying about superstitious fan-related nonsense.
