Would someone mind explaining to me, who doesn't read the manga (spoilered, if need be), why? Is Kafka some mind-controlling messed-up-people-possessing hell-girl?

Kafuka was dead before the story takes place, and her organs were donated to the students in class 2-He, which gave them some of her positive gene that prevent them from committing suicide because of their possession of the Showa ghosts who also commit suicide but regret it.
Because memories can be shared between donors and recipients, her organs also giving them some kind of shared disorder that make them can take turn taking Kafuka's role and the fellow recipients see the actor as Kafuka, including her appearance. Other people will see them as them, though. In short, the class is Kafuka's personal hive mind.
The school and the Itoshiki family specifically gathered these misfits in one class for her and the Showa's ghosts' exorcise.
Holy hellbore. Reading about it on Wikipedia, I just thought these were some messed up girls with psychological problems. Turn out they're more messed up than anything...
