    I should really start charging.
    I'd like the usual!
4/5 is Haircut Day! This is to commemorate the day when a prohibition was placed on women cutting their hair without government permission, and all the people who opposed it at the time. On April 5th, 1872, the Tokyo metropolitan government issued a prohibition that forbade women from cutting their hair short without permission. This stemmed from public concern about the "Haircut and Sword Edict" that was enacted the year prior where those of nobility or were serving in the military were no longer required to abide by strict hairstyle regulations and were free to choose their own hairstyle. Many women cut their hair short as a result, causing outrage about such hairstyles making women less distinguishable from men, especially since long, flowing black hair was considered ideal in Japanese women. Women at the time were opposed to this as maintaining long hair was costly, if they could even afford to, as the oils needed to do so were expensive, and posed a health problem, if they couldn't, as washing your hair only once a month was the norm. The prohibition has been lifted in the years since, and in remembrance April 5th has been dubbed "Haircut Day" by many Japanese citizens where they instead celebrate the freedom of hairstyles.
