    It is the triangular cloth used for protecting a dead person against evil spirits at Japanese funerals.
    It has various regional names, Hitai-eboshi, Tenkan, Houkan, Kami-kaburi, and so on.

    While my original comment may have appeared facetious, it was a genuine question and I appreciate henmere's useful reply.

    Mr. Obake didn't help at all; besides, there's far too much in Japanese culture for the answer to have jumped out instantaneously.
