Even looking back at that era Saber Marionette J had a weird 90's aesthetic I never liked. Slayers something similar going on, but pulled it off much better.
I adored so much about the nineties styles of animation, the popular genres and even the shortcomings (stock footage, overdone "monster of the week" trope [not that it was new]) were endearing because so many of the big buffs boasted such inspired, rich and innovative animation to pull people in.
