On May 23, 1946, the movie "Twenty-Year-Old Youth", directed by Yasushi Sasaki, was first screened in Japan, and was considered the very first film in the country to feature a kiss scene.
At the time, Japan was under occupation by the United States under Allied power following the end of World War II, and had most of its media heavily audited and censored by the Civil Information and Education Section of the General Headquarters of the Allied forces. One film went through David Conde, who noticed that the original script of a romance once had a kiss scene that disappeared in later revisions, as Japan historically considered kissing an act only to be done in private between two lovers. He demanded it be included, saying "Japanese tend to do things sneakily. They should do things more openly." Lead actors Shiro Osaka and Michio Ikuno filmed the kissing scene with a gauze between their lips so no direct contact would occur.
The scene and the film were sensational, and its screenings consistently sold out. Conde's department went on to require other romance films to include kissing scenes, even going as far as to not allow films that didn't have any. This regulation and the popularity of the scene itself led to the start of a "kissing film" subgenre in Japan and a more relaxed public attitude towards eroticism in the country.
