Excuse my ignorance but: What's the deal with Slayer and K-On? I'm unfamiliar with both of them, so I don't know why they seem to cross paths disturbingly often.

It is simply a joke. Slayer--for reasons beyond me--is commonly thought of as the epitome of metal music. I have heard them called "the most metal band ever/on the face of the planet/etc." K-On!, or specifically the music associated with K-On! is very pop oriented. That being said, the stereotypical "metal head" is usually close minded when it comes to music outside of the metal genre, and often has an aversion to pop music. So seeing the two acts associated with one another--especially both being touted as metal acts--should be seen as humorous.

K-ON, is an anime about a group of high school girls who play in a j-rock band called Houkago Tea Time.
The medium for this crossover is the fact they play music.
