It's kind of funny to me how people have pretty universally agreed to treat Alex as a woman, when the skin was originally intended to be gender-neutral. I guess the logic is that if Steve is clearly male (because of the name and beard), then the other default skin must be female?

Alex was created in the first place to test out the new model with thinner arms, also to bring more diversity to the "cast" of Minecraft and more options for the player avatars. But it's actually based on Jeb himself like how Steve is based on Notch, so he can take the blame in case people didn't like it.
Honestly in the long run, it's probably better that people saw Alex as a strong redhead than a twinkified Jeb. Helps to push the idea that Minecraft is for everyone as well.
