Deus Ex Machina: A plot device common in ancient Greek tragedy, whereby a seemingly inextricable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new element, usually a god or goddess moved unto the stage via a mechanical device. Hence the latin phrase meaning "god out of the machine."
