I do believe episode 10 ripped the soul right out of my previous conceptions of how the show was - in particular, how they became witches. I knew that they said that their soul gems got "dirtied" with use, but I thought a mahou shojo would turn into a witch and have her gem tainted when she fell into actual despair. But here, Madoka was turning into a witch, and almost Homura, even though she didn't show signs of going through any breakdown like Sayaka.
Such a beautiful exposition of friendship. I especially love how the artist represents how strong their bond really is.
Soul Gems can be tainted by using Magic Power too. Just like MG "convert" their Soul into Magic Power (and kyubei races collect a power that emited from converting process to save the universe)

It's also the ultimate way out for us fanfic writers who are busy coming up with ways to pull a Good End out of this mess. It doesn't matter how bad things get, so long as Homura is alive at the end, everything has the potential to get better.
