I've always assumed it was a compromise; instead of all Japanese (reinforces creator's intent despite we all speak English here) and instead of all English (despite it being what we speak, it may not cover names that have no English equivalent and thus would be applied inconsistently), so doing it in between would only be fair.

nice to see someone actually asked that.

it's not fair at all because it conflicts with nearly everything else on the site. we probably only have this situation because one particular mod or another absolutely demanded pokemon be some giant exception.

compromises are always lose-lose, because that's kinda the point; both sides refuse to be reasonable, so both sides losing something will be their reason. if it turns out to be a win-win, it wasn't a compromise at all.
