Cinquedea originally was known as 'five-fingers span blade', which DOES NOT denotes the largest width of the blade near the base. The name was thought to originate from the time when the blacksmith making these kind of blades started putting fuller grooves on the body of the blade to both reduce the weight of the blade and improve the spine rigidity; these grooves are often carved as a set of five (but other numbers, like three or four also exists) which is then alikened to 'fingers', and in turn becomes the inspiration for the name for these sort of blades. Cinquedea varies wildly in size, the shortest specimen was around 25 cm while the largest specimen was around 71(!) cm and based on their size they can be either used as a knife or sword.
