That analogy doesn't work. All the witches are sympahetic, since they are essentially fallen magical girls. I have absolutely no sympathy for Sephiroth. That's pretty much the basis of these pairings. It also helps that Charlotte is the cutest of the witches. Sort of.

The fanbase of madoka is fucked up (me included), that's the reason of this pairing.
a) Half of us started linking the show after ep 3 b) The other half started to watch the show after the info that the writer was Gen Unobichi was released c) We wanted a big downer ending to an already depressing show d) We believe in a little girl as our goddess e) We BILIEVE in a being superior to humanity (in contrast to the vast mayoralty of otakus and internet users that are atheist)
Actually I like this show because of how flawed and human like everyone is. Junko is my favorite character for being a great role model with actual life experience, second is Charlotte and than Homura.
Mami wants friends and Charlotte wants cheese. People clearly are frustrated about how easily we could have had a problem solved if it wasn't for that white fucking little critter called Kyubey......
And then Madokami re-wrote the rules of Puella Magi system at the end of the anime, at last making the easy solution possible.

You had me along for the ride right up until part D. After that I just started backing away slowly.

I certainly didn't.
I'm with Fizzypop. Most anime these days has bland characters that fall neatly into categories and have absolutely no depth or personality beyond their classification. They are nothing more than cardboard cutouts. There were also actual consequences. I'm sick of series where it doesn't matter what the protagonist does; Everything works out for them anyhow. The worst are when characters take ungodly amounts of damage yet they still live, or face impossible odds and still win because DERP. Fans of these series then masturbate over how unbeatable these characters are. No, they are not unbeatable; The status quo is what is invincible. Characters who rely on 'heart' (lol kubo) wouldn't last a day in Madoka's world.
