There exists no Hakurei bloodline. They just make a girl with potential the shrine maiden. (Hinted in Silent Sinner in Blue, by Aya, who says the youkai "might need a replacement for the Hakurei shrine maiden 'again'".)

There is a Hakurei Bloodline or Highly Responsive to Prayers is lying. And what the hell does Aya know? She's as reliable as a tabloid magazine reporter.

I wasn't going to say anything, but I devopled a strong sense of skeptism when ever Aya says something important.

Who is to say that some information from the first 5 games didn't make it to the Windows games? And regarding what Aya said, it's not really confirmed on what it really means, right? It's implied by her, but we don't know anything further than that. Reimu's family is really mysterious.
The canon status of PC-98 era games are debatable, and I think the only logical interpretation of what ZUN said is that they're different continuities. There are other inconsistencies between PC-98 and Windows games which I can't recall right now due to sleep deprivation.
And I think what Aya said is clear enough. Here's what she actually said: "I guess we need to find a new shrine maiden soon again." Find, as opposed to the next-in-kin inheriting it. In other words, if Reimu dies, then that's the end of the Hakurei bloodline. (Yes, FangPanzer is right there.) And apparently it happened multiple times before. Hell, it's likely that Reimu's original family name isn't even Hakurei. I wouldn't really call that a bloodline. At least it's not a continuous family tree. Still, I won't say it cannot be called a bloodline if one wants to, and it's therefore not impossible for it to be called a bloodline and yet be consistent with the said information.
Sorry if what I said makes little linguistic sense. I'm currently suffering from some sleep deprivation.
By the way, regarding the canon status of Silent Sinner in Blue, it's the closest thing to canon than any other non-game media as far as dialog is considered, because the script was written by ZUN himself and Akieda is said to have made absolutely no change or inquiry.
There's a difference to what she may say in her tabloid in an attempt to make things sound interesting or around others and saying it to herself, in which she sounds like she's not only about to mourn another shrine maiden, but one she knew well. In an instance like that I don't think it's her intention to embellish or lie.
Anyway, the Hakurei bloodline is only really referenced in relation to the yin yang orbs and the ability to use them. However, as far as I know, it's not stated either way whether being a Hakurei Shrine maiden requires being a Hakurei.
I should point that I "fixed" this in my head-canon like this:
1) If a shrine maiden lives to be old enough and produce a female descendant; that's great. the girl will be next miko
2) If she dies; no big trouble. The original Hakurei was a man living 1000 years ago. There are a LOT of people in japan with his blood. Yukari just find a girl of Hakurei descent of suitable age and starts fresh.

Precisely so. Except there might be one more criterion for 1) being that the said descendant should also be fit to be a shrine maiden. We don't know whether the potency is also passed down by blood.
