I wouldn't call disarming 'trickery', it's a perfectly legitimate tactic. Hell, if someone came at me with a knife, first thing I'd do would be to disarm the attacker, and only then push the attack. Then again, somewhere I read that Suwako was already looking to hand over the shrine, but wanted to go about it in an honorable way, hence the "staged" battle.

I've always read it that it wasn't so much that Suwako would have lost the god-battle as much as much as her forces would have been destroyed by Kanako's forces.
