I guess the little UFOs do sort of resemble clay pigeons...

The gameplay mechanics come into play from more than just the powerups. The UFOs really do blow up if a boss shows up.

Reminds me of Dutch's Shotgun from Black Lagoon.

But damn. Given our choices are Reimu, Marisa, or Sanae, she just killed somebody who might not come back and may have destroyed Gensokyo.
