    硫黄島

Iwo Jima (硫黄島, "Sulfur Island") is a Japanese volcanic island located south of the Bonin islands. Currently adminstated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Now officially known as "Ioto" in Japan.

Best known as the site of the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. The battle ended in a very costly American victory. It remains the only battle of the Pacific war where U.S. casualties (26,571) surpassed those of the Empire of Japan (18,375).
