The film follows Gemma, a robotics scientist at a toy company who suddenly finds herself taking care of her eight year old niece, Cady, after her parents death in a car accident. Due to her inexperience with children, Gemma creates a child size human robot with artificial intelligence named M3gan to take care of her niece. However, as M3gan becomes more smarter, the robot becomes obsessed in protecting Cady against anyone who she sees as a treat, including Gemma herself.
The film would later get a sequel, M3gan 2.0, in 2025, where Gemma is forced to work together with M3gan by building her a new body after a military robot that used the same technology as M3gan goes rogue and kills anyone that help in her creation which includes Gemma and Cady.
