ss scharnhorst
Ocean liner under Norddeutscher Lloyd, launched in 1934 and completed in 1935, the second liner named after General Gerhard J. D. von Scharnhorst. She operated the route between Bremen and Yokohama with sister ships SS Potsdam and SS Gneisenau, but in September 1939, she was trapped in Japan during the outbreak of World War II in Europe, and was later purchased by the Imperial Japanese Navy to be converted into aircraft carrier Shin'you.
