    tokugawa ieyasu

    徳川家康

    (January 31, 1543 – June 1, 1616)
Historical figure. Born as Matsudaira Takechiyo.

Raised as the political hostage of Imagawa Yoshimoto, he broke off relations after Yoshimoto's death in Okehazama. Renamed himself to Matsudaira Motonobu, then Matsudaira Motoyasu, then assumed the Tokugawa Ieyasu name in 1567.
Co-led the Oda-Tokugawa army in the Battle of Anegawa against the Azai-Asakura army alongside Oda Nobunaga.

Later fought against Toyotomi Hideyoshi at Komaki and Nagakute (outskirts of Nagoya) in 1584 before making peace with Hideyoshi.

After Hideyoshi's death, he led the Eastern Army in the Battle of Sekigahara against the (pro-Toyotomi) Western Army led by Ishida Mitsunari in 1600.

Became shogun in 1603, and founded the Tokugawa Shogunate which ruled Japan until 1868. This time period is known as the Edo Jidai.

Fictional depictions of Ishida Mitsunari are tagged separately.
