There is no restriction about Shinto maidens being virgins or not as far as I know. There are also Shinto maidens that served as prostitutes in Japan, so being a miko doesn't mean you're a virgin. In modern Japan, it can be akin to a part-time job as well, so there's no real need to be a virgin for it.
Neither can I find anything. Under the "Asia" entry it just mentions Nepalese customs. The only other thing related in any way to Asia would be Buddhism and Hinduism and both are under the India entry.
Just a quick superficial look, because I really must go to bed right now, but here states that the travelling Mikos during the Kamakura period were associated with prostitution.
I couldn't find anything regarding mikos and sexual habits, though. I'd have to look further than the miko wikipedia entry for that :V
There are thousands of shrines in Japan and Shinto differs across them. Like Christianity, Buddhism, or whatever, each have their own intricacies, customs, and qualifications. Some may require virginity, some may not.
Sanae is high class. the difference between an escort and a prostitute, is that escorts are typically so expenseive that they are only used as escorts to ceremonies *Ancient Japan* but what they lack in cheapness, they make up for in quality. Escorts never sleep with men who have stds. they get tested regularly, they work out on a daily basis, they drink less than normal prostitutes, and typically don't do drugs, have better living conditions *because they typically have more money* They almost always make the man wear a condom, IN OTHER WORDS, they're better.

This.
It's one thing to have some goofy parody hentai pictures, its another thing to try wrongfully validating it as being "canon" by attempting to twist and interpret both history and the series into something it's not.
Case in point about this miko=prostitute nonsense: Just because a few catholic priests have molested children doesn't mean they all do.

The difference is that people still think most Catholic priests are not pedophiles, and that it was only some bad apples covered up by a church more concerned with protecting its own image than the wellbeing of its congregation.
Compare it to the Borgia family in the middle ages, when most people saw a Pope who actively engaged in wars and assassination for political gain, leading to the reformation as a backlash against the corruption the church had during that period of time, and you'd be getting a better comparison.
Miko during that time really WERE homeless streetwalkers who would "perform" for anyone who could house and feed them, not terribly dissimilar from Geisha.
That said, Miko are different now, and Sanae is from a more modern era - this is a reference not to miko being prostitutes, but high school girl prostitutes. Canon Sanae (especially UFO, in reaction to Nue) behaves in stereotypical high school girl fashion, and this is a parody prostitute highschooler Sanae.
Mikos and religion did this. Mikos and religions fucked that. Sanae is a whore. Sanae is not a whore. Throw in a few wiki pages because they are most liable source in the internet.
Guys, who gives a fuck really. Just look at the picture, laugh, fap and move on. No need to freaking copy/paste an entire college essay on the comments trying to prove a point that no one will remember after a few days.
Wiimeiser said: How do you even tell if someone's a virgin, especially using old archaic methods?
Short answer; you can't.
Long answer; some women experience tearing of their hymen and bleeding their first time, but that's not a sure way to tell either way. This is because whether a woman's hymen tears or not depends on a multitude of factors from the size of insertion, lubrication, roughness of sex, to the general tightness and stretchability of an individual woman's hymen. Not to mention that it can be damaged/stretched/torn pre-sexual activeness from insertions, physical activity, and occassionally health issues that come up. Oh, and even a torn, loose, or damaged hymen can repair and tighten itself given time, so even more reason tightness and tearing don't always mean virginity.

FYI, "most" means "more than half." Not only is that a patently absurd claim, but the truth is indistinguishably close to "being a Catholic priest has no correlation with sexually abusing children."
