What an embarrassing mistake!
I thought this strip just might be good reference for those going to Taiwan Reitaisai on June 6 on what to do if one loses one's passport. However, by this point, it seems the story isn't going to go in that direction, so I'll write it here, though it'll include spoilers.
First, before your trip, you should get a certificate of residence from a government office in Japan and carry it, or even a copy of it, on you. That's because it seems a driver's license isn't of any use here.
So, once you've reported the lost passport to the police, you then go to the embassy, but there's nothing actually called a "Japanese Embassy" in Taiwan. Instead, you go to this place called the "Taipei Economic and Cultural Office". Please note that isn't open on Saturdays.
Well, the most important thing is not to lose it in the first place, so those of you going to Taiwan, please take sufficient care.
