So it seems there were two versions of this manga popularity poll, one where voters could only pick one character (which Frieren won #1), and this one where voters could pick multiple characters, and (Frieren only won #5). I wonder why everyone is focused on this one.

Title characters often get first place. So the result this time sure would attract attention.

Mostly for the humongous irony of dead characters being in the top place... specially since one was a one-shot villain.
I mean it's funny, especially the ones with Aura lording over Frieren for beating her. It's just also a bit disingenuous given Frieren was top ranked in the other version of the poll that was otherwise run at the same time for the same audience, but with different rules (and very few places seem to acknowledge exists).
It's actually really interesting that they ran both polls at the same time and got different results. It tells us, among other things, that while fewer people like Frieren, those who do tend to like her a lot, while everyone who scored higher than her on the "can pick multiple characters" poll may have broader general appeal, but fewer dedicated fans. Are there any other characters with such a large gap between their rankings on one poll versus the other?

While it's great to see someone agrees with me that much on the statistics, I don't think it's that interesting. This is pretty much bound to happen. Especially when the characters in question are written like in this particular series. Like, Himmel is written into such a great man that our protagonist is on a journey tracking her own path with him to know him better. It's hard to top that kind of "best".
