Horo --> Holo?

Posted under General

I'm still not 100% sure here, but what is the official name for Horo from Spice and Wolf? It seems like in the anime in one of the endings it's Holo, and across other sites they list her name as Holo.

Also, minor as it is, but Craft_Lawrence --> Kraft_Lawrence? I'm seeing it spelled with a K some places as well, but not sure which is official.

I have to agrue that this is one of those fucking retarded romanizations from some dude who had no idea what he was doing and to keep it horo, regardless of the official status. It's not wrong by any means, the characters comprising her name spell out horo. We have quite a few other tags that prefer real romaization over what the creators say due to their being completely retarded.

tl,dr: horo over holo, precendent.

Holo makes me twitch so I have to agree with Log. If it gets aliased to Holo, I definitely don't want to be the one clicking the "add alias" button =P Also, I don't want to think of Lawrence as a brand of cheese but...

I'd be more inclined to accept Holo (still very reluctantly) if someone could point to a deity or mythological creature or something else with an established name of "Holo". You know, to get some degree of the rationale for the spelling. I understand that we don't always apply that same strict criteria to most seemingly made up names, but I fully admit that personal preference is biasing me here. No point in tiptoeing around that fact. ::shrugs::

... because I know Danbooru usually liked to stick with official names...

WTF is up with you recently, people? DANBOORU DOES NOT HAVE ANY AFFINITY TO OFFICIAL NAMES. We usually adopt them for made-up western-sounding names, because there's nothing better to go with. But for official names that are clearly non-western (or clearly retarded), we're more than happy to drop them and adopt sane versions instead. With Horo there's absolutely nothing to suggest it's inherently a western name, and Holo sounds idiotic, so I'm strongly against. As for Kraft, it suggests German, which does seem to have such a name actually, so I'm inclined to say that they did actually have a clue here.

What about Sun/Lunar (forum #10092), then?

But what if the fansubs had called her Holo and then the official name was Horo?

You know, just a thought...

I think it is mainly a case of people going by what the fansubs called her and getting used to it more than anything else. But whatever...

And consistency with what the usual romanisation practice is. Technically you could romanise 誰 as "dale", and 晴子 as "Haluko" (and at least one seiyuu has an official site which refers to her as "Halko", ewww), but would you like that?

Of course, Horo's name is written in Katakana, not Kanji.

Horo and Holo are both 100% valid.

It is, but that's not such a terrible thing. Precedent is worth something. Not always enough to warrant not going with the official name, but in this case, my opinion is to stick with Horo. It's just my own (and almost everyone's, I think) preference, yes, but I'll openly admit that.
