shoujo-ai vs yuri

Posted under General

Just a simple question:
When is something considered "shoujo ai" and when "yuri"?
IMHO Yuri must be used when a pic is a little more "explicit" with the relation between the characters on it (post #185566); shoujo ai must be used when is a little more "soft", you know... blush, hugs... (post #185691)
I'm wrong? just want to know so I can tag them properly next time.
Oh yeah, bad engrish. Sry about that.

There was some talk about this earlier but no decision. One thing is that English and native Japanese definitions vary (almost in terms of flipping the terms but not quite).

One point to make is that the shoujo-ai tag isn't really used. It's currently got 6. For a time and still now sometimes, instead of shoujo-ai it was simply '2girls' being used. But neither is used consistently/

AFAIK Shoujo-ai is a term that western fanboys created because they were a bunch of pussies (lol) and didn't want to directly adopt the japanese term yuri as a pass-all, and wanted something to distnict non-explict girl-girl relationships from explict ones. Thus, "shoujo-ai" was born.

In terms of tagging I've only applied Yuri to clearly explict posts or ones where it's otherwise obvious.
As far as I've understood the "2girls" tag was supposed to be used for the "two girls in picture but not acting quite gay enough to be considered yuri" -images, but looking at the tag that either isn't the case and I recall wrong, or it's just been the subject of lot's of user malignment due to its somewhat ambigous nature and no clear rules/definitions anywhere.

That's what I thought too. 2girls is for an image that involves two girls being "together", but it looks friendly rather than sexual. Like, I tagged post #181966 with 2girls cause there's... two girls. But they're not really yuri-ing it up in my opinion.

I don't think shoehorning "shoujo-ai" in as ANOTHER potentially ambiguous tag for images with 2 girls would be a very good idea. (Like, are the girls in post #181966 just two friends playing videogames together, or are they lovers?) Let that one rest.

I'd prefer to expand the "2girls" tag to any image with two girls that isn't explicitly yuri. I guess.

Whether or not that's appropriate depends on what definition of yuri we go with, which is precisely the question under consideration.

Perfect case of a borderline image, I guess. They're naked and their knees are all up in each other's crotches and such, but they're not necessarily doing anything intimate to each other.

I'd probably leave the tag as arguably accurate regardless of which you used.

I don't like the word yuri. To me it's ambiguous, especially considering the difference between Japanese (soft and hard) and American (mainly hard) interpretations of the word. Shoujo-ai has the same problem. I'd rather replace it with an English word that's more explicit.

Let's approach this from the perspective of someone who wants yuri pics. I type in yuri. What do I want to get back?

1) Girls eating each other out and using dildos on each other
2) Girls kissing each other
3) Girls touching each other

Tags like 2girls cover (3). The yuri tag is currently covering (1) and (2). I've no real problems with this arrangement and I think it makes sense.

I would like to alias yuri to girls_love which should make clearer it's not solely about sex, and Wikipedia seems to agree the two terms are synonymous.

I find the 2girls tag problematic only because (1) it doesn't scale to more than two girls and (2) AFAIK it's not used outside of this site.

I support whatever solution is both defensible and consistent, so girls_love as an alias is okay, I think. The only problem is getting another word if you wanted to replace 2girls that was somehow distinct enough from girls_love to make the point to a casual, first time browser.

well, there are explicit pics with the 2girls tag. so that is obviously not a good separator. .i just prefer shoujo-ai / girl-love because it makes sense to me that its just two girls together with no sexual happenings.

Girl (as in female, not specifically little girl) being treated as Loli, doesnt make sense to me at all.

yuri to me is like yaoi. just sex.

2girls is intended to be non-sexual but that doesn't necessarily mean non-explicit.

Umm.... as I understand it the 2girls tag is used for pictures of multiple girls who aren't lesbian. Like if there was a threesome with a guy and two girls. It's still a stupid tag but it doesn't imply rating:safe, it just implies not yuri.
