shoujo-ai vs yuri

Posted under General

Okay, 2girls is good and well and all that, but as a yuri fangirl, I have to say, many of us are notoriously bad at not recognizing the difference between girls together platonically and girls together romantically because we really want to believe it's the latter. I mean, we watch shows and read manga which are like... 95% subtext.

Thusly, I have a lot of trouble distinguishing the 2girls and the yuri tag, because a fair deal of the stuff under 2girls is stuff I'd want to find when I was looking for yuri, and so... I kinda want a more clear distinction if those are the terms we're going to use.

Yeah, it sucks of me to complain and not offer a solution. Sorry.

I think "girls love" sounds very ambiguous. I don't know where people got the idea that "yuri" implies "porn", but the meaning can be clarified in the wiki.

In practical terms, if someone thinks "yuri" implies sex, he'll tag his uploads of pictures of tribadism as "yuri", but not his pictures of girls kissing. Would an alias to "girls_love" make him any more likely to tag both as such? I don't think so; it seems more likely that, once he sees "yuri" turns into "girls_love", he'll just carry over his idea of an implicit sexual connotation to the new term.

lol confusing post.
i dont peg Yuri as (hardcore sex) just. nude sex. or heavy petting. or -depending- obvious pairings.

well, from reading the thread. we all obviously have different opinions and versions of what Yuri, Shoujo Ai, and Girl Love is.

the 2girls thing is new to me and it seems like users are not tagging pictures correctly when it comes to 2girls. .i am fine with it, if thats how it is here. but more direction on what it means would help.

like lichifruit put. a lot of the uploads in 2girls are not really...fluffy cute moments of hugs and blushing. its literally sex ^_^;;
sorry if i am misinterpreting post

What they say in Japan, I don't really know, but I go to Yaoi Con, and the three terms I seen thrown around all the time yaoi, shounen ai, and shota. Yaoi means there's sex. Shounen ai doesn't have sex, or at least doesn't have graphic sex or something. This is probably why so many people associate yuri with the implication of sex.

Unfortunately, I sometimes wonder if the people who really really need to read the wiki actually do.

But you're right: in Japan yuri doesn't in imply sex, and given the fact that we have a system for ratings here, we don't need more than one tag for questionable and safe yuri vs explicit yuri.

That said, if we're going to change it, really now ... girls love? That's a direct translation of the words shoujo ai, and the yuri communities I browse tend to either say yuri or shoujo ai, but rarely would use the term girls love, probably because most of us are weeaboos.

I think you're probably right that they'd just use whatever meaning they used before.

I always assumed the 2girls tag to mean, well, literally, two girls in one picture. Should I start retagging my uploads yet?

There's a fair deal of girls cuddling, holding hands, or kissing, too. Whatever the definition of the tag may be, it's being used far too literally, or _something_. I'm under the impression it's meant for seemingly platonic images of girls together.

However, if we take 2girls literally as being an image with 2girls in it, it overlaps with almost every yuri image on the site, and misses images like post #23830 , which I sure would want to see when looking for whatever we call not necessarily platonic seeming images between girls because that makes me _squeal_.

So I think we either have lots of overlap between 2girls and safe yuri, tagging some images as both, or we try to decide on some line where it goes from being tagged with 2girls to being tagged with yuri/girls_love/whatever_we're_going_to_call_it_now. Unfortunately, I don't think we can come up with a distinction that isn't really ambiguous.

If it seems like I'm trying to tailor these terms to my preferences too much, please tell me. I'm really just trying to give my opinion of someone who keeps track of the several yuri communities.
