Tags you should (not) use

Hm, well right now it's supposed to be used for just vaginal sex, but like I said I think that could be a separate tag with "sex" becoming more generic.

Upon reading your first response again I've realized you were agreeing with my, "generalize the sex tag" opinion. My bad. For some reason I thought you were saying the opposite. Your posts definitely make more sense now. :)

And yeah, that was kinda my point with bringing up post #211207... when it's not obvious what's going on a generic "sex" tag would be useful.

Or you could read the dialogue :P

Heh. That's a good idea too. Apparently my knowledge of anatomy isn't that bad. ;)

But even so, I would say this example lends support to idea that such pictures could be tagged generically as "sex" until someone such as yourself comes along with some more knowledge about what's going on (possibly because of being able to read Japanese) and adds the more specific tag(s).

Edit: Oh, and I just recently came across a tag, "blow_job" used on 15 pictures. I imagine that should be aliased (or whatever) to fellatio?

Updated

I do have a question concerning tags that aren't quite so popular due to content. I'll use "mud" or "nyotaimori" as an example.

Is there any reason not to use such a tag solely based on lack of popularity (or any reason at that)? I would think not, but it's something that's gone through my head and well, I don't want to make a fool of myself for any reason. Thanks for any feedback!

I'm not sure what you mean. Unpopular as in not used much, or unpopular as in the content of the image generally is frowned upon?

In the case of the former, it's fine to use it, as long as it's accurate. In the case of the latter, the unpopularity is due to the image, not the tag, and if you upload it at all it's probably *more* important to tag it properly so people can blacklist it.

I suppose I've thought about both views, though genres frowned upon is my main concern...though it depends on individual taste and I'm sure there's a fair diversity of mods. If the image is the problem and not the tagging (assuming I've tagged it accurately), what might be some determining factors for its deletion? It's happened only a few times in my case and I certainly hope I'm not breaking any rules.

Bestiality has been singled out under the do-not-upload rules in the terms of service:

Bestiality: Any photograph or photorealistic drawing or movie that depicts humans having sex (either explicit or implied) with other non-human animals.

There's something of an uneasy truce regarding old (you might say "vintage") material. There's a _lot_ of stuff there that would, under the current regime, not make it and probably even get outright deleted, but I've personally shied away from actually going back and deleting any offensive material.

I think that most of the mods agree that deleting old content that goes against the current rules is kind of a waste of time in most cases, except where they are erroneously used as a precedent (such as with the motivators).

Having said that I personally wouldn't mind deleting every last image depicting bestiality. I'm no fan.

Ah. Though quite a few things I personally wouldn't count as "bestiality" is up...not to mention dead-on anime beast stuff. Is that tag currently being taken care off/removed?

Only photographic or photorealistic bestiality is forbidden. I don't think we have any of that.

Ahh thanks for clearing that up. I would like to make a comment regarding image translation as well. I've been going around using my knowledge of Japanese to help translate some stuff and noticed that there's "translated" and "translation" tags. I've been using the former as that's the one most used not to mention it's the one with a wiki. Just incase no one's caught it, the latter should probably be removed.

Due to popular characters named after traditional Japanese instruments (such as Shamisen from Haruhi) and even an artist (Biwa), it can be a little hard to find the pictures of the actual instruments, although this only applies to the two mentioned. One contributer used the tag 'Shamisen_(Instrument)' for one of the pictures involving an actual Shamisen - would it be worthwhile to create new tags for the Biwa (for either the artist or the instrument) and or retag the actual Shamisen pictures under Shamisen_(Instrument)?

Yeah, when there's a conflict, the best thing to do is to specify a tag with a _(descriptor)... When an artist uses a name that is also an object or a character name, I usually put _(artist) behind the name, since I figure it's more likely that the person searching will want to find the object/character rather than the artist.

For shamisen it's a bit of an iffy case, but the cat was first on danbooru, so...

Priority for me: Series > Characters > general > Artist.

(where 'priority' means the simpler tag, i.e. put the qualifier on the lower priority type)

I'd say artists are more important than items, BUT it depends what the item is. And since _(artist) is so widely known and understood, I'll say generally add the qualifier to the artist and leave the other thing without the descriptor. Or put a qualifier on both if the item is something obscure/has almost no tags. There's no hard and fast rule though, just use commons sense.

Series vs Character is very, very rarely a conflict since we use full names, but one example is Potemayo.

We should probably standardize on one of the two, but which one?

Far as I know, shouldn't they refer to different things?

post #63940 - Katagiri Himeko has an ahoge.
post #197513 - Furukawa Nagisa has antenna hair.

If people are using them interchangeably, I was under the impression that'd just be a mistake.
