The Fate/Grand Retagging Project

Posted under Tags

I've been slowly working on adding official alternate costume tags to relevant Fate series images, and I was wondering if it can include any and all sources of alternate costumes present in FGO like Craft Essences, Mystic Codes, Spiritron Dresses, Ascension forms, and so on. As far as Ascension forms go, I think it's a much easier alternative to just use that tag, compared to making individual tags for each of a character's forms. I still wanted to get everyone's take on it before doing anything with those.

I still think we need tags for each ascension, whether individual ones per character or a general tag. "Official alternate costume" doesn't help much when all three forms are rather distinct, and in that case, which ascension does not get tagged as "alternate"? Making it consistently the first ascension wouldn't necessarily work since in the case of some characters it's rare to see it depicted (like Nursery Rhyme's book-only form in first ascension).

Should we be tagging characters like Saber Lily as younger? There's a fair few characters like Kid Gil, Da Vinci (Rider), and whatever the fuck that one Jeanne alt is that are technically canon younger versions of themselves.

They're haphazardly and almost randomly tagged as younger. Should they all, minus cosplay, be hit with younger or should we garden the tag out from them?

I usually don't tag younger/older/teenage for characters that are... canonically depicted as their younger/older/teenage 'selves'. Especially not if those 'selves' have their own dedicated chartags. Unless it's a one-off gag or something (i.e. some kind of lab accident or shady drug or mysterious magic ritual that only occurred in one episode or chapter). As far as I'm concerned, younger/older/teenage mean youngified/aged up/teenagified, and the linked Pixiv tags under "other names" support this, as they are nearly all things like lolify, shotify, childify, adultify, ageify, etc. So they shouldn't be used for, say, younger or older versions of a character that occur in a flashback or flashforward, or a segment of a story (or prequel/sequel) set in the past or future. Or younger/future selves of a character who appear via timey-wimey time shenanigans (Fate summoning mechanic included).

Compare this with the Strikers version of Nanoha and Fate, who don't usually get older, though sometimes the occasional tag will still slip by. And these characters don't even have their own dedicated chartags (yet).

Of course, the Fate series is a special case. But then again the Fate series is a special basket case that threatens to spread its own 'unique tagging convention' to every other copyright (even when they don't make sense, see mass qualifying of chartags), so I feel that this practice (tagging younger for younger canonical versions of a character that have their own dedicated chartag) should be stamped out with extreme prejudice. If we don't nip this in the bud this will spread to AzLane too (for all the '-chan' younger variant characters), resulting in more pointless padded tagging and search noise. Then from there to all other copyrights.

Does yakumo yukari (young) count towards or against it?

Yakumo Yukari (young) is kinda tricky because it was originally based on Asai Genji's artwork for Curiosities of Lotus Asia, but then become used (in both the English and Japanese fanbases) for any younger version of Yukari, even if they might not be intended to be a CoLA reference.

Though since she already has a dedicated tag, tagging younger isn't really necessary... probably.

Touhou characters are usually also somewhat tricky because of Zun's artstyle making it difficult to discern the characters' apparent ages. So most of the so-called 'canonical' "apparent ages" are determined by fanart trends and not necessarily by... canon, strictly speaking. Though some of the official artwork for game/manga/book/etc spinoffs do help provide some 'secondary' canonical depictions, though even those will occasionally conflict sometimes (resulting in memes like Pad Chief Sakuya and Tiny Tenshi).

But something like Alice Margatroid (pc-98) (AKA Lolice) should definitely not be tagged younger. That one is unambiguously clear (younger canonical depiction of Alice in the Touhou PC-98 game era), unlike most Touhou examples.
