Deprecate Platinum Blonde Hair

Posted under Tags

The recent spree of depreciations strikes me as sweeping the problem under the rug. For both silver hair and platinum blonde hair there are clear instances of a single character being heavily uploaded (often by a small number of unrestricted uploaders) which feature a large range of hair colors but which are tagged the same color. For the preponderance of light green hair tagged as silver, this character is/was Komeiji Koishi; likewise for light green hair tagged as platinum blonde, Morgan Le Fay (Fate).

Solutions should target the specific characters or uploaders, not the tags themselves. For starters, I think wiki links to hair color tags should be removed from character wikis and/or suppressed from appearing under "related tags". We want hair color to be tagged as it actually looks, not how most pictures of the character look.

The problem with having excessive hair colors is it further fragments color tagging which is already tricky to get right. If you're looking for a character with grey hair, you'd think to search grey hair. But some uploaders don't want to tag grey hair as grey hair, so it's in silver hair instead. But silver hair also contains a plethora of other colors because it's an easy dumping ground, so you can't reliably find grey hair in silver hair either. And if somehow we removed all the mistags from silver hair without deprecating it, now we just have two grey hair tags.

I have yet to see an image tagged platinum blonde hair that isn't blonde, brown, grey or some far out colour like purple, so I don't see the use of the tag at all.

Platinum blonde is literally just one shade of blonde out of many. There's absolutely no reason to have a tag for it, unless you want to start tagging every shade of hair. And there are more than a dozen for blondes alone.

Silver, auburn, and even maroon all make more sense to have a tag for than platinum blonde does.

I really wish we could have shade color tags, but they're simply never going to work. They're just going to be dumping grounds for canon tagging and there's nothing we can do to stop users from using them that way. Believe me, i've tried.

If people can't even reliably distinguish between pink and purple or brown and grey or red and orange or blue and green, they're never going to be able to reliably tag "platinum blonde" or "maroon" or "silver" or "lavender". It's not even just a matter of personal color perception, don't underestimate how many people tag using shitty monitors with fucked up color balance that display completely wrong colors.
