replace on_vehicle

The bulk update request #10460 has been rejected.

remove alias on_car -> on_vehicle
deprecate on_vehicle

I think it would be more useful to be specific and use on_car, on_motorcycle, on_tank, on_train etc

Secondly, "on a vehicle" has different connotations and usages for different vehicles. For example, "sitting on a car" strongly implies two things: the car is not moving and the person sitting is not in a position to drive. "Sitting in a car" has neither of those implications. However, someone "sitting on a bicycle/motorcycle/scooter" can operate it, and it can be moving, while "sitting in a bicycle" is a non sequitur since it doesn't have an interior. But then one usually rides "on a train" rather than "in a train", despite it having an interior anyway.

  • I'm not really in favor of these efforts of deprecating broad tags, especially when it means creating tons of niche tags for the uncommon vehicles like tractors (post #5376943), construction machines (post #5283554), or whatever this contraption is post #4115605. Not every vehicle may end up fitting into normal vehicle names, which is where a broader tag would be valuable to have.

    Also doing this would simply make it that much easier for mistagging to happen. Using tag names like on_airplane, on_train, on_bus, etc are all first going make people assume the tags are for depictions of people riding aboard the vehicle, not sitting atop of it.

    That already happens with on_vehicle: 1 2 3

    If you're trying to prove that this is some kind of pervasive problem, you're going to need to point to more than just a handful of mistags all by the same user.

    Also, I'm not convinced that your proposed BUR would have prevented this anyway. Anyone who thinks those posts count as on_vehicle probably would have tagged them on_car as well. Unlike "on a train" or "on a bus", no native English speaker uses the phrase "on a car" for someone sitting in one of the seats, whether it's a convertible or not.
