I need a privileged account to search multiple tags now?

Posted under General

Okay. I just did a search for hammer, and got a whole load of Touhou pics. I don't "hate" Touhou, per se. But I feel that the sheer Touhou surge kinda kills the variety in it. So I add the tag -touhou to it, and it tells me I need a privileged account to search multiple tags.

Now I understand that the reason why tag blacklists were removed from normal accounts is that it constituted a tag search to remove the tags that matched the blacklist search, thus reducing the load on the server.

But now, this restriction is getting in the way of even remotely normal use. I've seen images in my searches that I don't even want to see as thumbnails. I gotta ask. Is this really necessary? Is the load from people who want to search for a specific image killing the server? Is it too much to search for what I want, but not what I don't want?

I'm trying to cut down on the features to make the site more speedy, yet provide a minimal level of functionality for everyone. I consider multi-tag searching more of a luxury. They take a lot of time to compute (especially when people start chaining seven or eight tags together).

I see. Well, I rarely run that many tags in a single search. How about a happy medium? How about limiting us regs to 3 or 4 tags at a time?

I concur. I didn't have this problem at school, until I got home at noon today, and I was curious as to what the deal was. It just seems rather sudden, is all...

I agree with Thundercross, if the problem stems from people chaining together 7-8 tags, then why not limit non-privileged users to a few tags (say 3-4), rather than just one?

The trouble with this is that it really does take the functionality down to an absolute minimum, because it makes it impossible to find specific, or even fairly general, things. I personally have yet to use more than three tags in a search, so I think that the "a few tags" idea is probably a reasonable compromise.

Edit:
Ah, and another thing, I assume this change coincided with the removal of color-coding for typed tags, yes? I actually really liked that feature; it made it a lot easier to tell what you were doing.

They're still color coded for me, do you mean they're just uncolored when signed out? In that case I thought they always were.

Heck, I thought multi-tag searching had been disabled for uninvited members for quite some time now.

They were color-coded for regular level members until the multi-tag searching was removed.

Ah, so maybe it was just if you're not signed in *at all* that they don't work.

Well, I assume that much, but it was definitely missing from the logged in regular level display as of this morning. Can someone who didn't just get bumped up a level reconfirm this? I never thought I'd see the day where I wanted to *put off* being privileged for a little bit.

I'm not exactly sure if this is the same thing, but posts I uploaded before, had color codes for artist and series, but the later ones don't. As I said, I dunno if these are related.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about.

Tags are no longer color-coded for unprivileged members.
What's the logic behind that again? Does it use more network resources to show different font colors or something?

I think the colored tags are a good idea, now that I know what the colors mean. It would be nice to have a legend somewhere though (or at least somewhere easier to find, since I've never seen one).

What is the point of even signing the hell up if we only get the ability to upload and change tags to posts? Hell, I wasted my time last month even signing up.

Now their is no point to even sign-up at all unless you need/want to upload something. This is ridiculous, it truely is. Guess danbooru really is dead if this is how things are going to go.

I understand the whole "cut-down on server load" issue, but this is too much. I'll go back to using google till I see this site handled by someone better.

Thank you anyways.

Well, there's only three, it's not too hard to figure out =P

But yes, I imagine reflecting type for every tag that gets loaded must be a drain, though I wouldn't know how much.

Wow, thats a massive amount of entitlement you are feeling, maybe you should see about having that object I see poking out from behind you.

At any rate, the color coding vanishing is probably an error, please save the FLIPPING THE FUCK OUT for after albert comments on it.

And instead of bitching you could spend your time contributing to the site. Imagine that.

Then do it. Make your own Danbooru clone and we'll see how it fares.

I would tend to agree that Danbooru's probably gotten a little bit TOO crippled for non-priviledged users, but something has to be done to keep the site operational.

It's been operational. I haven't had any problems with it for god knows how long before it closed, and no problems with it after after it was re-opened either. I've had to click the refresh button once or twice, but i do that on most sites. it's normal. I don't expect instant response from the internet, servers don't run that fast if their aren't a number of mirrors holding the same files/information.

And Fencedude, if that's "flipping the hell out", then, you really haven't seen anyone truely get mad... Just cause there is cursing, doesn't mean I am flipping out. I would have used caps if I was flipping out. Go crawl back under your rock.
