create alias floating_screen -> holographic_monitor

Link to alias

As it is, floating screens may be held up by either hidden wires, propulsion, or simply lack of gravitational attraction. Holographic monitors are those that are based on lasers and light. From this basic description, it might seem meaningful and easy to differentiate between them.

However, a lot of the recent pictures are not easy to categorize. Some, like post #1354867, appear to be a floating pane of glass that functions as monitor, while also being translucent like a hologram. Some, like post #1111022, would appear to be holograms but of interface widgets rather than complete monitors. These complications render the distinction arbitrary, giving it a negligible benefit. Also, figuring out which of these tags to use takes a substantial amount of effort, effort that probably isn't worth that negligible benefit.

If possible and if the system lets us have the transitive alias, the preferred target is floating screen so that the tag doesn't have to apply to complete computer monitors.

The left screens are abstract and only exist in the image. The right screens are tangeble and are portrayed as being in front of the pilot. Your alias proposes these separate cases are not worth separating. Do you disagree that they are separate or worth separating?

Edit: On the other hand, most posts under floating screen do infact appear to just be what I'd rather call holographic displays. In fact the case I posted is the only case like it I can see, and even then it might be up to interpretation. On that note, whether these hologram technology is probably up to interpritation too and the only thing we can say for certain is that they're floating displays.

I propose moving them all to floating display or keeping it at floating screen. No need to bother with an alias for 7 images.

Edit: Opps, 71, not 7.

I'm confused, did you suggest an alias because of a couple fringe cases where you couldn't make an objective decision?

Because of that and a few other reasons:

  • I don't think it will be possible to define what constitutes a hologram when there are too many cases in the middle
  • There are holograms that are merely windows rather than monitors. It wouldn't be nice if someone expects to see that under the holographic monitor tag when that's actually a floating screen.
  • I don't think people will be looking for distinctions between holographic and non-holographic screens.

I think they are not worth separating. It would be acceptable to call them both floating screens. People can look up on the wiki why a holographic monitor or holographic screen will not be in use as tags on the rightmost picture.

I would prefer this so that it can be more easily understood that a screen of a desktop can count as a floating screen.

In topic #9692, jxh has said "I think display might be better as the catch-all." I myself am unsure of what to alias them to, so this proposal may have to be stalled if we can't make a decision, not that this will mean the end of the world either.

Edit: fixed forum->topic mistake
