Americans attempted to sink Hornet with gunfire and torpedoes. But American torpedoes in 1942 were notoriously bad. So they had to abandon the carrier to her fate....alone.
Japanese destroyers found her later and attempted to tow Hornet back as a prize (that would be glorious for the Emperor). But as dawn came, they realized they they wouldn't get enough air cover, nor defense against possible submarines, so they sank USS Hornet with gunfire and torpedoes. Japanese torpedoes were much more effective, but still USS Hornet was stubborn. She eventually sank.
