    Don't think I ever heard of that, and I've lived in Britain most of my life.

    Well, prior to the Europeans coming to the Americans, there was no Chocolate in the Old World. So I suppose St. Valentine's Day in the two or more centuries before that would have had to had something else involved.

    Solid chocolate wasn't even a thing until the mid-19th century.

    I think, I understand Warspite: IF the booklet Hamakaze's holding is a chocolate-catalogue, she is bewildered by mushroom-shaped chocolates and the like(couldn't find out if there are rose-themed chocolates in Japan).
