Actually, that little incident was an invention by the media. O'Bannon did sink that submarine but no potatoes were thrown.

EDIT: I was just reliably informed that it's far more likely than not that potatoes were thrown. Especially given the proximity of the food storage area to the point of contact.

I did read about the commander's account of the event.
But what I meant wasn't the actual event, but how the tale of it actually got a great boost on morale, even to this day, with the enthuisiasts.
The Americans sure did have more incredible stories to tell, unlike the Japaneses.
