Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 - 21 April 2025) was the former 266th head of the Catholic Church, the bishop of Rome and sovereign of the Vatican City State. Was elected and became Pope on 13 March 2013 after his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, announced he would step down due to health issues. Notable for being the first Pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere. Notable for his humility over pomp and grandeur, was sympathetic to the LGBT community and having friendly relationship with other religions and different Christian groups. Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025, Easter Sunday, after suffering from complications from pneumonia.
