Okay! So this here suggestion is for the sake of making tagging more streamlined and (theoretically) less dumb and in line with how tagging is handled for other garments.

As it stands, all actions done to/styles of headwear, legwear, and footwear are neatly condensed into singular umbrella tags. It would be ridiculous, for example, if we had a separate color tag for each different variety of legwear. Yet we have five different tags for yellow underpants. Five!!

Unifying these redundant tags would also hopefully encourage users to start color-tagging underpants that are not panties. When you see 3,132 posts tagged as "white bloomers" when adding tags, it's a safe bet that it's a valid tag. When you see only 10 posts tagged as "green bloomers" when adding tags, not so much. Needless to say, nearly all colored bloomers aren't tagged as such, because who wants to take on the gargantuan task of populating individual color tags just for bloomers? [Disclaimer: This is just an example post, not a call-out! The answer is nobody, because that task is impossible.] Additionally, no individual color tag for briefs has even broken outside of the triple digits, presumably for the same reason.

At the moment, it seems that more tags are being made to combat the issue of not having a universal tag (like black_male_underwear, which is an objectively stupid and overly long tag), and as a result make things more complicated than they already are, which is really less than ideal. We do not need to tiptoe ever-so closer to having ribbon-trimmed_boyshorts or polka_dot_thong tags!

Just looking at the black_* tags, we currently have 57 black_bloomers, 6 black_boxer_briefs, 7 black_boxers, 85 black_briefs, 62 black_male_underwear and 63667 black_panties. Thus, aliasing them to a single black_underpants would made all of them (except for black_panties) unsearchable as they will drown under the panties.

However, I do think those boxer_briefs, boxers, briefs and male_underwear tags could be mass updated to a common tag.

In topic #17610 I presented the problem with having color tags for every individual underwear type and I do agree that they should be under one tag. However as many people expressed already, they don't want us playing with the female side of things. So I went ahead and crated the tags like black male underwear.

I know it doesn't sound the best but I couldn't think of a better solution. I'm however glad to see someone bring up the topic again to confirm whether or not we should go along with this or name it something else (like underpants, or just simply briefs? Dunno).

I see where you could be coming from looking at things like [color/type]_legwear and such, but really this is beyond practicality, the end state of things shouldn't be an all-encompassing [color/type]_clothes and the removal of all distinction. It's just not useful especially while panties, briefs, boxers and so-on are highly fetishized articles and quite distinct, but I can tell you put effort into this, sorry!

People drool over legwear length constantly. The thighhigh, kneehigh, pantyhose, and hidden sock crowds all have to use the same legwear tag. Crop tops and tank tops got converted to shirts despite the midriff and armpit crowd. I'm sure they don't want to see anything besides what they want. But the 2-tag limit forces them into black_legwear + thighhighs with no other tags available. If this gets rejected, I would seriously question why the others were accepted.

One thing to point out is that this lumps bloomers together with underwear like panties, which is problematic given the fact that bloomers can be used both as an undergarment and as an overgarment to conceal undergarments (such as with post #2995110). It's dual nature would warrant disqualifying from trying to lump them with the others.

I'm opposed to this, as I do not agree with trying and getting rid of the color panties tags and lumping them together with male underwear.

Yeah, this is my primary rationale behind this. As it stands, underpants are the only garment of clothing that does not have a standard color or style tag. Shirts, legwear, headwear, and footwear are all incredibly broad - with legwear in particular being one of the most hyper-fetishized clothing groups out there, yet even that has been consolidated into an umbrella group, even encompassing stuff you wouldn't consider to be "legwear", like ankle socks. When most people think of something you put on your head, you think of a "hat". Yet even that has been been consolidated into "headwear" to include helmets, crowns, and the sort. Most headwear is a hat. There are 15 posts tagged "black helmet", yet 37,000 tagged black_headwear. People are using the "color_headwear" distinction to tag helmet colors. We are considering helmets and hats to be the same thing for the sake of unifying color tags.

Pith helmets and baseball caps are a world apart from each other, yet fall under the same tag. Athletic ankle socks and pantyhose are two very different things, yet fall under the same tag. Briefs are basically just panties with a fly, yet tagging them as [color]_panties would be incorrect. If we can consider a combat helmet and a fez to be the the same thing for tagging, why not panties with or without a fly so we don't have 5 entirely different tags for yellow underpants?

Oh dang, you do raise a perfectly valid point about bloomers. They definitely can be and are used as outerwear as well, so it's fair to omit them from a BUR like this. That being said, when worn as outerwear they are indifferentiable from pants (or shorts, depending on the length), and should be tagged as [color]_pants (or [color]_shorts), as that's what they functionally are.

One of the issues I omitted from the original post are the numbers invovled.

These are the largest color tags, per garment:
white_panties - 108,288 posts
white_briefs - 244 posts
white_male_underwear - 92 posts
black_boxer_briefs - 6 posts
grey_boxers - 9 posts

Even if you were to clump every single of those underpants color tags together, there would still only be 351 posts. If these numbers were more comparable with panties, keeping them separate would make sense. But when combined and they are still only 0.003% of that number, it's hard to justify these other garments even having their own color tags, especially considering how they're technically all just different forms of underpants.

"underpants" is probably not the word I would have picked for such a unification effort. I believe that it has region-specific connotations in the different English-speaking regions.

Given the example of white_panties and white_briefs, I wonder whether we should not just redefine *_panties to include mens' underwear. (I looked at the ~3 images in each of plaid_briefs and plaid_boxers as a randomly-chosen example and was not at all convinced that they would be out of place in plaid_panties -- one image even had both tags, and was tagged as a female character!)

It wasn't clear from the orignal post whether there were technical reasons that prevented you from choosing _underwear over _underpants?

That said, I think Rignak brings up a good point. I agree that some users probably would like to (for example,) saved search images of male characters in underwear, and this is a distinct use-case specific that would be valuable use-case to preserve precisely because the tags are applied to a smaller subset of images. This is distinct from headwear, legwear, and footwear, which tend to be more unisex. (Ok, well at least hats and sneakers... less so for socks vs leggings.)

No one is ever going to agree to that because no one searching something like white_panties solo is going to want to see dudes wearing briefs in their searches. You're just forcing people to add -briefs to their searches at that point. They're separate for a reason, despite any similarities they may have.

Because bras are underwear too. Lumping all lower body undergarments, whether male, female, panty, or boxer, under one umbrella is bad enough, adding bras and corsets too is just ensuring these tags cease all usefulness.

Pantys are some kind of a fetish tag and it makes no sense to get rid of colored panty tags for several reasons. I don't think that someone wants to search for white_underpants when he wants to see some white panties. It's really and not always the best choice to just lump everything together, especially for something like pantys.

I somewhat agree but then the legwear tags should really be split too. I would argue that the difference between socks and pantyhose is bigger than between panties and boxer briefs, socks often wouldn't even qualify as legwear covering only the foot.

There are kneehigh, over-kneehigh, and thighhigh socks. Those are socks covering a good portion of the leg.
While there are many occurrences of socks that don't extend past the ankles, they seem to be the minority of cases, and the ankle is still technically part of the leg, so imo socks are still legwear.
Then there are those really short socks covering only the foot. I would say they are footwear, as they don't go past the anklebone. But those are relatively rare.

While on the subject of panties I think the no_panties tag is often misused. To me it should only be used in case where panties would be expected but are absent. Images of intercourse, bathing, and any other situation where one would expect no panties the no_panties tag should not be used.

Yes, in situations of sex or bathing, no_panties shouldn't be used. If you see images where it doesn't belong, you're free to remove the tag.
