The 2girls -tag

Posted under General

As per forum #5017, as far as I've understood this tag is/was supposed to counteract and balance the yuri tag - As in, "if it doesn't fit under the yuri tag definition, tag it with 2girls instead".

Example posts of this would be stuff like post #256934, post #257067, and post #2645. Example posts of what it should not be would be post #257559, post #257657 (?), and post #256370. Basically "If it isn't at least mildly suggestive of a relationship, it's not yuri, and thus should fall under 2girls instead". Am I right about this, or completely out in the blue?

If this is how it's supposed to be, the tag should be cleaned up and a more explenative wiki entry written, but I didn't want to do that yet since I wasn't completely sure this is indeed the case.

I'm well aware of what the wiki says, but it a) doesn't seem to really align with the discussion outlined in the forum thread linked above and b) seems like a fairly pointless tag in itself due to the vast catch-all definition. By that defintion it's almost a counterpart to the "male" tag, except not nearly as useful due to the signal/noise ratio.

Anyway, the point is I'd like to see some form of tag for images that fit the criteria of "not yuri but a bunch of girls in the picture". Not something that'd outright rule out rating:e posts, but something that _would_ rule out either implied or explict sexual images.

To my understanding 2girls was supposed to be such a tag, but apparently that is not the case? (Y/N?)

That was my understanding as well. However, I've changed my mind since that thread, the whole 2girls/3girls/4girls thing is silly to me now.

I think we should have a tag that is like "yuri", but covers the other end of the spectrum. Something like "platonic" or "friendly" or so. That way it doesn't matter how many girls are in the picture, and it's obvious from the name that it doesn't overlap the yuri tag.

Or just 'girls'.

To get this perfectly straight, are we looking for a tag for pictures that have multiple girls but aren't yuri, or a tag for non-explicit pictures of girls being affectionate towards each other (i.e. stuff that would be called 'shoujo-ai' elsewhere on the English internet)?

I wasn't even aware the differentiation went that far now o_o. I guess such classification could is useful, even if it has nothing to do with the orginal intent.

As for coverage, I've understood that the Yuri tag is supposed to cover what's called "shoujo-ai" on the english internet, so if you want to see girls being affectionate but rule out the porn you could just search for "yuri -rating:e".

This tag would, as previously stated, cover the other end of the spectrum, eg with people just being friendly, or where there's just several girls associating with each other in a picture.

"Friendly" is a good idea except I don't think it'd really fit in all cases (eg would for post #257067 but not for post #2645 and probably not post #256934), and broadening such a tag beyond its dictionary meaning seems like a self-defeating idea.

"Girls" is a bit better in that regard I guess, but like 2girls, it again has the danger of people tagging it on posts where it wouldn't belong (eg, any image containing girls).

"Platonic", as silly as it does seem to me, might actually be the best idea for the tag so far, at least as long as preventing unvanted tag pollution stands high on the list of requirements.
I'm a bit at loss myself at least when trying to come up with anything better that would feel more intuitive but at the same time be specific or odd enough as to not have the tag unintentionally polluted at the same time.

As I recall, the point of the "2girls" tag was to give some form of release to those users who would otherwise tag every other picture as "yuri". In other words, what was important was to keep the "yuri" tag focused; as long as we don't have false positives in "yuri", it doesn't matter if some images are tagged as both 2girls and yuri, or if 2girls is used for any pictures with two girls as its name indicates.

Relax, you don't have to do anything.
