During the Battle of Cape Engaño on October 25, 1944, Chiyoda was assigned together with the remaining operation fleet carriers to the Northern Force commanded by Vice Admrial Ozawa Jisaburo, their objective is to lure the 3rd Fleet away from the 7th Fleet so that the Center Force could penetrate easily through San Bernardino Strait and annihilate the amphibious invasion force on Leyte Gulf. Chiyoda was crippled by four bombs from TF-38 aircraft from the last waves of attacks. Hyuuga attempted to tow Chiyoda but was prevented by the third wave of aircraft, then Isuzu attempted to towed the crippled carrier but the heavy presence of enemy aircraft overwhelm her, Isuzu was forced to retreat after three attempts to rescue Chiyoda. Then the damaged Chiyoda was approached by a surface fleet composed of 2 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, and 9 destroyers, Chiyoda stubbornly returned fire but she was shelled repeatedly until she rolled onto her beam ends and sank. No survivors were permitted to be rescue, Chiyoda's 1,470 crew all perished including her captain, CO. Jyo Eiichiro.
I think Chiyoda would suffer from some major PTSD because of the event of that day; PTSD manifests itself in her dreams/nightmares.
"Chitose-onee... watch out... ah... A dream?" - AV Chiyoda's Secretary line 2
I must buy them time, even if just a minute or a second.Ise and Hyuuga are still alive....and Zuihou...They're calling out to me.
My comrades are calling out to me.I can't do that....and Zuikaku...I'm all beaten up as well... I can't do that.I'll buy them as much time as I can. That enemy plane isn't even seeing me as a combatant anymore.Chitose-nee...Because I'm here to act as a decoy.
During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, all four Japanese carriers served as decoys due to the shortage of pilots....everyone has sunk.If I just stay like this then I might live through it....It took the DuBose task group 30 minutes to sink the immobile ChiyodaAs result, American force who are taken by destroying Tama and Akizuki let Ise and Hyuuga get awayThere were no survivors among Chiyoda's crew.
